The Fruits of Labor

Some of my favorite memories of my mother are centered in the kitchen. She was at her happiest there — delighted by meals made from scratch and the joy of feeding her family. She was a talented baker who also milled her own wheat; I can still smell that bread coming out of the oven, ready to be slathered in butter and honey.

Preservation was another one of her gifts, though it’s always struck me as a little intimidating. The pressure, the steam! This time of year, I always picture her — apron on, surrounded by flats of peaches, tomatoes, and canning jars ready to get to work. The markets are full of amazing fruits right now. I love indulging in them at their peak, knowing those jars will line the pantry shelves for winter, so we’ll get to taste the season all over again.
